WATERING/NUTRITION

Once you have your site set up and plants in the ground, it’s time to grow these seedlings into harvestable vegetables to feed you and your family

Feed your plants a suitable fertiliser blend to suit the vegetables you have propagated. Feeding your seedlings once a month will provide them with the nutrients they require. Once again, a local garden would be able to provide you with a suitable option. Consider options such as liquid seaweed, or a nitrogen-based fertiliser that will boost your plant growth significantly. Feeding your seedlings once a month will provide them the nutrients they require

The plants will also need water. Depending on the season you are in, plants could require water multiple times a day. To ensure your seedlings are well looked after, we recommend checking your soil moisture daily. Sometimes a small watering can will be sufficient. Or potentially setting up a small irrigation system may benefit you. Plants need water to carry out photosynthesis, so if there is no water available for uptake, the plant won't grow. Soil should be moist and leaves should be rigid. If you see leaves wilting and the soil is dry, then water is required urgently

Be aware of pests and diseases in your garden. Any little pest will slow down your plants' growth. Weeds in the garden should be removed. Common pests to keep an eye out for are snails and slugs. Apply a slug/snail bait every month to keep these pests away from your crops. A healthy garden that has good nutrients and is well watered will minimise any chance of pests and diseases getting the best of your plants
